"The Man Who Shot Cane Skretteburg" is a reference to The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence (1962), an excellent John Ford Western starring John Wayne and James Stewart. At the end of the movie, it's revealed that 25 years earlier, John Wayne's character murdered Liberty Valance.
